Description
A house for the living of two families in a warm-humid climate; constructed by bearing walls in the new urban texture of Dezful, which reminds its environment and context. The design started by investigating the client’s needs, determining facing challenges that arise from the site situation, and the context in which the land is located. The subject of the defined project is to construct a new house instead of the old house (residence of the Sha`bani family), whose land in previous decades has been paved in one of the 235 square meters (10 by 23.5 meters) in the developed context of the city.
The client requested to construct a two-story house where the parents live on the ground floor, one of the son`s family on the first floor, and the anticipation and possibility of developing another floor in the future. One of the main goals for the design team was to create architecture belonging to the place and reminiscent of the context which is the old texture of the city, Dezful. The whole structure of the project is shaped by a simple geometry of brick load-bearing walls. The most obvious item that demonstrates a reference to the context of the city is the continuity of using bricks as an architectural symbol of Dezful.
The first faced challenge was how to deal with the common building type built in the subdivisions (north-south division of the mass and the yard) at the maximum level of employment required on the land (75% of the level of occupation according to regional regulations); Intensive heat in addition to the presence of seasonal dust has forced all the existing houses to cover their yards. So as to, the use of open and semi-open spaces were practically meaningless.
Therefore, it was necessary to create shadows in the yards, both for outdoor and parking. The building mass was considered as a whole frame, which presents the extracted concepts of the project by subtraction method. Thus, open and semi-open spaces are distributed in the total mass. Here, the patio acts as a “lock” inside the house between the public areas (daily and living spaces) and private spaces (bedrooms).
These patios would behave like a courtyard that is suctioning and conditioning air from the front yard into the living space and also provide the possibility of internal communication between the two floors. Due to the access corridor to the bedrooms, two east-west patios have been created; One for keeping plants, and the other next to and serving the kitchen (according to the employer's request for open space to cook in ceremonies).
For parking cars and the need for a well-proportioned outdoor space, a large front yard was unavoidable. In the upper unit, a mass was subtracted to create an open space (first-floor terrace), and through this space (terrace open space) a guest room was placed on the front yard as a split level, which shaded half of the front yard. As a result, a series of sequence open spaces were created between the courtyard, the terrace and the third courtyard on the guest house.
Upon arrival, concrete exposed stairs (reminiscent of the visible and traditional stairs of Dezful) can lead independently to the guest room (guest bedroom). The third yard created on top of the guest room was covered by a false wall in the facade, in order to develop the proportions of the overall form of the project and also to create a cozy and secluded courtyard. It could also be a yard for a possible third unit in the future.
