Description
How can the possibility of coexistence and adaptation to contemporary life be preserved while preserving the characteristics of old buildings?
Emarat Jan is a 60-year-old building reconstruction project on the suburb of Tehran.
A) The issue of the second house as a space to experience the desired lifestyle has become one of the unwritten necessities of citizens, which is mainly composed of middle-aged educated people.
B) Today's citizens, in addition to pleasant features such as away from the crowded urban space and experience of different climates, have chosen the suburbs due to the possibility of experiencing their desired lifestyle. Suburbs, due to their physical characteristics and providing more freedom of action, are a good platform to fulfill this desire.
C) The old houses in these areas sometimes have their own unique features and typology, but due to the incompatibility of their space orders and their tradition with the lifestyle of the contemporary citizen, today we see that the pattern of these areas is rapidly being demolished and new buildings with multiple shapes and identities are being replaced.
Our question in this project was:
How can this local heritage be preserved and adapted to the contemporary life of the project employer while preserving it?
First, for this purpose, in the first step, we identified the elements that produce the characteristics of this building. It seems that the bulky and load-bearing structure of brick walls, sloping roofs covered with tin and wooden trusses are common elements of buildings of this pattern and while creating a distinctive character, it has preserved the memories of the neighborhood over the years.
Second, by preserving these elements, the project carves the building from the inside and turns it into a container with unique spatial features and allows the loading of a new spatial system.
Third, in the third stage, after removing the walls and partitions in connection with the change of the program, we replaced the previous volumes with the new volumes as the Life Style Box.
