An excerpt from Earrings, a Novel

Kamran stands on the pavement. There is a big pool in front of him. He must pass over a stone bridge. Sound of water is being heard. Across from him is the wooden door with the glass panes in its two sides. The entrance hall is seen through the panes. He leans on his stick. “What is that turquoise light?” he asks watching the hall’s walls. It is the same old light.

The shining dress of a girl who was a good complement to the garden. At that dreadful night when the world was spinning around his head, the same light reminded him of living a life. Before they enter, he takes off his glasses. The world gets hazy, just like that night. His steps are now faster and stronger. The smell of green house, the garden’s shadows, the sounds make him calm. He realizes that the stones under his feet are those of the river. Not everything is lost.

He gets near the metal door on which the earrings are swinging. He opens the door. The creaky door moves slowly on its hinge. He steps no more. He only opens and closes the door and listens to that sound. He imagines an opening small door. A creaking hinge. Somebody brings him Jaleh’s good sound and light. Kamran puts his hand on the wall and steps across the threshold. He touches the pendant on the door. The metal leaf moves on its small ring and goes back to its first place. He stands and caresses it. “This is my mother’s earring. I had left it before leaving here.”
