Description
Subject
Encountering an abandoned warehouse of seventeen square meters and fifty-five cubic meters left from the buildings of the first pahlavi period, which was left in the body of the upper Chaharbagh bala passage.
Chaharbagh bala street was a street along Chaharbagh Abbasi started from Si-O-Se-Pol Bridge to Hezar Jerib gardens; and its construction started from the first pahlavi era. Considering that maintaining and improving a building is more sustainable than demolishing and rebuilding it, we considered our intervention, from the beginning, as an opportunity to explore the possibility of rehabilitation. We did so to see how we can preserve both the body and the spirit of the old building and to place our contemporary architecture in it to meet the needs of today using the potentials of the building; to let their contrast and evolution have a dialogue.
Acupuncture
Regarding the history of tsunami of destructions of Chaharbagh Bala industrial heritage factories which was due to the aim of separating and developing their construction during the past years and considering the fact that only one Risbaf factory has remained from the period when Isfahan was called "Manchester of Iran", the question arises as to how one can come up with an example to return these lost spaces to life cycle in a way that is compatible with today's conditions and can have a greater impact?
Plan
Considering the conditions and situation of the project, we suggested to the employer to reuse its capital and make it a platform for artists in a specific and limited way so that they can use that space with different applications, such as art exhibition, a space for holding events, workshop, meeting and accommodation rooms.
Design
To achieve these goals, we first identified the building's potentials, including high altitude and ledges, and according to the plan, we decided to place a pink open box, which was very clean, smooth and thin, in the old volume, which was very old, harsh and heavy. Both are ultimately raw without having to mix them together. Like a young man looking to the past and vice versa!
In this way, maintaining the existing conditions of the building, we placed a wall with metal sheet up to the height of the line above the ledges, so that while using its thinness feature, it also has a magnetic property for installing objects.
This wall defines the aqueduct [1], including bathroom, storage and entrance door.
It has access to the rest area (on the roof of the aqueduct and the bathroom) with a ladder.
To achieve a greater flexibility, the lights (with the ability to move, adjust the direction and mount on the thickness of the wall sheet) were designed and built. And the tables were designed with movable bases and the possibility of changing the height (which can also be used separately as small tables by removing the top plate).
