Description

Khorassan’s Great Regional Museum is one of thirteen regional museums being built in Iran and is the largest museum of Iran. It was originally designed by M.A. Mirfenderesky who completed 30% of the project and unfortunately passed away. The project was then entrusted to Gamma in February 2008 and inaugurated in February 2015. We re-designed the project to fulfil the mission of a museum whereas before it was more of a cultural center.  Minimum changes were made to the exterior architecture whereas the interior architecture was totally re- designed, as well as the landscaping around the museum and its connections to the Kouhsangi Park.

The original design by M.A. Mirfenderesky was based on the Kakhe Khorshid in Kalate Naderi which comprises a cylindrical Seljuk mausoleum around which Nader Shah had several rooms built in an octagon. Mirfenderesky’s design was also much influenced by Louis Kahn; Gamma has preserved these guidelines: Seljuk, Afsharieh and Kahnian architectures.

The main concept for the interior architecture is a minimally Modern style with some Iranian and Islamic touches: thus the very sparse mirror works and the patterns in the stone works. The Museum has 18000 sqm of built area and through our changes the exhibition spaces were increased from 3000 sqm to 5000 sqm. This is a museum where the civilization of greater Khorasan, from Antiquity to Qajar periods, will be shown.
